A transformer is defined first and foremost by its turns ratio, which is equal to the voltage ratio from input to output. Low frequency performance is determined by the transformer's inductance, signal level and the source impedance. Core saturation causes distortion, and for this reason it is usually extremely important to ensure that there is little or no DC flowing in the primary or secondary, as this will cause asymmetrical core saturation.
